New Fire Engine Arrives!
The El Segundo Fire Department has taken delivery of a new Fire Engine. Engine 31 will be assigned to Station 1 and will primarily serve our residential community. Engine 31 was designed by ESFD’s apparatus committee through an extensive process. This process included input from multiple city departments. Fire Engine 31 is a 2017 Pierce Arrow XT PUC pumper and is powered by a Detroit Diesel DD13 motor which puts out 500 HP and 1850lbs of torque. The Engine will carry over 2400’ of hose, holds 500 gallons of water, and is capable of pumping 1,500 gallons per minute. Fire personnel are being trained on the operations of the new engine and we are eager to put it into service soon!
Fire Captain Workshop
The El Segundo Fire Department recently held a Fire Captain’s Workshop. This program is designed to educate and train members of our department on many of the responsibilities and duties of a Fire Captain. It is part of succession planning within the department to better prepare our members for advancement through the Fire Department ranks. Some of the topics covered during this workshop included: Leadership, Truck Company Operations, Engine Company Operations, Administrative Duties and much more! The information gained at this workshop was invaluable for members preparing to take the next step in their careers.

Centennial Golf Gala - SUCCESS!
In May we held a Centennial Golf Gala to celebrate our 100 Year Anniversary and to raise funds for local charities. We are happy to report this event was a huge success! All attendees had a great time and we were able to raise over $10,000 dollars. We would like to thank our community for supporting this event and for making it so memorable and successful. WE HAVE NEW FIREFIGHTERS!
This month we welcome probationary firefighter Nicholas Howell. Nick was raised in Fresno and attended the University of Southern California where he earned a Bachelor of Arts and met his wife Kristen. Nick was married in 2014 and now has a two-year-old son, Patrick William, who is the joy of their lives. While at USC, Nick played football as an offensive guard, and upon graduation, signed as an NFL free agent for the Tennessee Titans. He would later play for the San Francisco 49ers, New Orleans Saints, and the Oakland Raiders.
After football, Nick enrolled in fire science classes at Fresno City College and in the fall of 2013 began Santa Ana’s Fire Academy. Upon graduating the Fire Academy, he pursued a firefighter position while being employed as an EMT for American Ambulance. He is excited to be part of the El Segundo Fire Department and he is ready to give everything he has to this profession.
He states, “What I love the most about the El Segundo Fire Department is the quality people I get to work with. I’ve learned that when you become a member of this department, you are gaining another family. I am truly blessed for this opportunity and I am dedicated to representing the El Segundo Fire Department and proudly serving this community.”
Nick is currently assigned as the firefighter on Truck 32 at Station 2. We wish him success in his new fire service career.
