Downtown Newsrack Consolidation and Replacement Announcement
The El Segundo Downtown Committee recommended that the newsracks located in the downtown area be improved to enhance the overall aesthetics. In compliance with the El Segundo Municipal Code’s (ESMC) Section 9, Chapter 4, the City conducted an audit of the existing newsracks and contacted the publishers to determine the current number of newsracks needed. As a result, the total number of newsracks will be reduced from 47 to 30 units. Removing the unneeded and unused newsracks will support the Downtown Committee’s goal of improving the appearance of the downtown area.
City crews will be replacing all pedestals and trays for the newsracks located on Main Street and Grand Avenue. The City will clean and repair/replace all broken newsracks as part of the downtown improvement effort. Please note that going forward it is the responsibility of the newsrack users/owners to inspect and repair their newsracks on a regular basis to ensure compliance with Section 9-4-20 “Maintenance” of the ESMC.
In order to complete the installation, the City will be temporarily removing all newsracks in two phases to reduce the impact on businesses and the public per the following schedule, which is subject to change due to weather or public safety priorities.
- West side/Odd# addresses: February 26th – March 9th ;
- East side/Even# addresses: March 12th – March 16th
