History Committee Update
“A people without knowledge of their past history, origin and culture is like a tree without roots.”–Marcus Garvey
The El Segundo History Room is open the first Saturday of each month from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. Mark and Marcia Marion have volunteered to be in the room at that time to accommodate visitors. Also, the room is open most Tuesdays from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., or by appointment by calling (310) 364-0117. The History Committee will make every effort to accommodate visits. Come in and learn about the community of El Segundo!
The Friends of the Library and the History Committee sponsored the re-naming of the “Friends Room” to the “Sue Carter Friends of the El Segundo Public Library Community Room” on February 16. We hope everyone was able to attend. Sue is a member of the Friends and the History Committee. She was instrumental in helping to furnish the 1990 library addition and putting books in the El Segundo schools when the Middle School was re-opened in 1998. In 2012 Sue led the drive to digitize the library’s 1913-2013 El Segundo Herald microfilm collection. The History Committee is very happy to see this tribute to Sue after all of her work in the History Committee for many years.
At the February 7 History Committee meeting, David T. Hodder presented a donation of a study he worked on in 1990: “A Photographic Essay of Historic Houses, 1906-1919.” This is an incredible documentation of the development of properties in our city. After receiving this document, it motivated the History Committee to compare it to housing in 2019. Kerry King and I photographed all of the addresses found in the original work, and Kerry then reassessed the number of homes that are well maintained. Please come by the History Room and see if your home is on one of the original lots. Some of the document’s photos can be found on display in the case just outside the History Room.
The History Committee meets the first Thursday of each month at 7:00 p.m. in the library’s Rose Garden Room. We encourage anyone to attend and participate with this important resource for our community.
I look forward to seeing you in the History Room!
