National Public Works Week
National Public Works Week, observed each year during the third full week of May, is a celebration of the men and women who provide and maintain the infrastructure and services collectively known as Public Works. From providing clean drinking water to designing and constructing complex infrastructure and public spaces where our communities gather every day, Public Works services determine and advance our society’s quality of life and keep our communities safe and strong.
On May 15th the City Council proclaimed the week of May 20-26, 2018 as “National Public Works Week” in the City of El Segundo, and called upon the citizens of civic organizations to acquaint themselves with the issues involved in providing our public works and to recognize the contributions that public works officials make every day to our health, safety, comfort, and quality of life.
Public Works Director Ken Berkman had some inspiring words when he addressed the City Council:
”I really appreciate [the video’s] focus on quality of life. All of us chose this profession to help society and improve all of our quality of life. I like to say we’re doing a good job if you don’t know we’re there!
But we’re always there – from the time you wake up to the time you go to bed and every moment in between – Public Works is always…at work. We take care of water and sewer systems, storm drains, building systems, and vehicles. We review development plans, manage environmental programs, and deliver multi-million dollar capital improvement programs for our City. We take great pride in partnering with our Police and Fire Departments as first responders in case of disasters or catastrophes.
But most importantly, especially for folks in our Public Works team, I am truly proud to be part of their team. They are extremely hard working group. They go out of their way to deliver the best services they can to our residents and businesses to make sure we enjoy the highest quality of life that we can. Thank you Council for this Proclamation. On behalf of everyone at Public Works, we’re always here at your service.”
